[f-AA] Garmin panel dock

Hi Gregg,

I flunked Mechanic 101, got fixated on 337 and didn't even think about having to do a Field Approval. I haven't done one
in a long time, but will be shortly with my Gee Bee Model D coming together, brake system, wheels, tailwheel and several others.
My "weird" statement came from a friend in the north east, he called and asked a question...the guy started asking all
sorts of questions and them informed him that his IA should be asking the questions and not him.
You used "I", are you a FSDO kinda guy?

If you want to install (permanent installation) an AirGizmo GPS dock including hardwiring the power it will need a Field Approval...so the FSDO is going to be involved anyway. A Form 337 just documents the work but there isn't any approved data for the installation that I'm aware of...hence the Field Approval. That said, get an IA involved who has a good relationship with the Airworthiness folks at the FSDO and go from there. And I never get weird when aircraft owners ask questions...prefer to keep the lines of communication open.....well, almost never :^)

I've seen the Dock in EXP machines but not in a certified plane, this doesn't really mean anything...
The Dock hard mounted in the aircraft will require a 337. I would hard wire it. Redo the W&B, the weight
of Dock and unit, it's easy and will avoid possible questions later. I'd NEVER involve FSDO or the likes
except as a last resort...unless you have Friday Night beers with the guy...
DISCLAIMER: I've yet to have any problems with FSDO or MIDO, but some inspectors get weird when a
non A&P or IA asks them questions, never mind that it's the acft. owner asking the question.

Why not just ask your IA?
He knows what the rules are. I certainly would not involve the feds. Why would you invite that kind of scrutiny?
But if you insist, let us know what they say,PLEASE?

Thanks. I guess the best thing to do would be to go to the local FSDO and see what they say. Wiring it into the avionics bus without messing with a cigerette lighter would be the neatest way to do it. Just want to get it done before the boot cowl is installed.....Louis

The local Feds' opinion is they would rather have the electrical connections hard wired in to the buss with circuit protection than the Mickey mouse (sorry Walt!) cigarette lighters. They consider it safer.

If it is not held in with screw or rivets or nuts and bolts then it is portable.
And not "installed in the aircraft"
the trick will be "where does it gets it's power.

Batteries, ok cigarette lighter plug, ok. Hardwired into the ship's power? Not so good!

            I guess the worst case scenario is a 377 and a w&b?
Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Does anyone know how the FAA feels about the new Garmin panel dock in certified aircraft? What I'm referring to is a new unit which mounts a Garmin 196, 296, etc. flush in the panel, but still easily removable. It seems like they'd buy off on that being a removable unit as much as a yoke mount. Just wondering, since I thought that might be the way to go with the Sedan. Thanks.....Louis
