I have a new computer now which gives me 24k.   DSL is not available in my area.  Thanks for the info.

  The DSL modem, hooked up to a DSL line will at least triple your internet access speed. For 
  you it would multiply it by 10 or so if you are only getting 16k connection speeds. The router 
  is used if you want to use more than one computer on the same high speed line, or if you 
  have a laptop and want to use wireless around the house or property. 

  The first question for you is DSL available in your area, and if so then what will it cost to get 
  into your house. Not all areas are covered and believe that you live out in the country so it 
  can get iffy for people in this situation.

  Guys, if you have an issue with a router or switch (they are much the same thing) you can 
  bypass them and run the Cat 5 internet lead directly into a computer and check it out that 
  way. Routers have been known to go bad, or have one of the ports die on you, so if you are 
  having problems with them that's the first thing to check. Turning the power off on a cable or 
  DSL modem as well as your router/switch is the normal "reboot" process. Turn the cable or 
  DSL modem power on first after letting it sit for a minute, then power up your router/switch 
  and both should work.
