[f-AA] #### any traffic please advise

Boy, this is a tough one. I have ranted before, about the overuse of the "Any traffic, please advise" thing. Here in Wenatchee, I do appreciate it, though. We are in a river valley, and fly into an uncontrolled, 2 crossed runway, airport. We have gliders, ultralights, and big (compared to me) heavy things(Horizon Airlines -8's, I believe), that almost always fly a 10 mile, straight in final for runway 12. They are flying for money, and I respect the somewhat nonstandard approach. Well, there is limited room to manuever here, between mountains, and airport, and everybody is silouhetted against a hillside, and if they are West, into the sun. If you take off, on 30, you are climbing right into the path of inbound heavies on 12. My house, and my favorite place to overfly, is right in the approach to 12. As long as it is not overdone, it sure is nice hear. I look constantly, scanning like a fool, and am suprised, at least once a week, by a radio call, and a "Hun in the sun" that I didn't catch. None have yet been a factor, but you can almost measure the relief, when one of us comes back, "OK, Cessna blah, blah, have you in sight, #2 in the pattern" It does make a difference, as long as it is not a crutch. Many times, I have been downwind, for 30, with a -8 holding on the stop line for 12, and he says" Horizon XXX, holding short 12, any traffic, please advise. He's trying to spot me below the hills, into the blinding sunset. I am more than happy, to make an additional position report. They always come back with "Roger that, Horizon xxx, holding for landing traffic" Sometimes, I say screw the procedures, use what works, and makes things safer. Just don't turn the radio into a CB, and we are good. (End rant)Kyle

Chris, people with radio's get run over all the time. People with out are always looking, but is still no guarantee you won't get run over. Everyone needs to be looking out the windows, radio or not.

It gets real interesting at my home airport KPNC (Ponca City) where you can see everything from champs to citations, they often ask for traffic to advise and that doesn't bother me much it just the big wig pilots that assume that after that call every pilot has a radio and is monitoring it. Therefore, they aim straight in and don't worry much about wind direction ,as us Champ pilots do, and they don't look for us at all. All my friends now carry at least a handheld to keep from getting ran over. - Chris Hiatt

No Steve, not at all, however it did not personally offend me that he added "any traffic please advise." Now, had he said "Any traffic please let me know where you are or I will kick your butt", I would have possibly been offended.<G> Larry

Would you have found his transmission any less useful, and would you have responded any differently, if he had instead said, ""Lebanon , MO traffic, Citation ### entering left down wind runway 18, Lebanon." ?

Guys, I guess I am a nit wit, and completely out of sync with the AIM, but here is our conversation yesterday P.M. . (Me) "Lebanon, Hawker 737 left down wind runway 18; Lebanon." (Lebanon unicom) "737, winds 335 at 7 no reported traffic." (Me) "Roger Lebanon, thanks Kathy". 15 seconds later, "Lebanon , MO traffic, Citation ### entering left down wind runway 18, any traffic please advise." We had come from SGF, 35 kts. away and had not filed. He had cancelled with center. and had just switched frequencies. I immediately "Advised" and was happy he asked if any other traffic in the area. I guess I am just stirring a pot. Don't mean to. I just personally do not see anything problem with it, but again; what do I know? You can tell I don't know much , or we would have filed. Beautiful day, <G> Larry

Heard the classic "any traffic please advise"
on CTAF few days ago and a response of.......

"AIM four one nine gulf over here"

then nothing else, or any response to the miscreants repeated calls for more info.

Piqued my curiosity, finally dawned on me to look it up
            see below....

            AIM
4-1-9 Traffic Advisory Practices at Airports Without Operating Control Towers
            g. Self-Announce Position and/or Intentions
General. Self-announce is a procedure whereby pilots broadcast their position or intended flight activity or ground operation on the designated CTAF. This procedure is used primarily at airports which do not have an FSS on the airport. The self-announce procedure should also be used if a pilot is unable to communicate with the FSS on the designated CTAF. Pilots stating, "Traffic in the area, please advise" is not a recognized Self-Announce Position and/or Intention phrase and should not be used under any condition.
