[f-AA] #### any traffic please advise

Good points, Tony. As a "NF" (New Fart), I know why I appreciate being aware of all the traffic around me. My poor Chump, though it feels fast to me, is slug slow. We have Citations, -8's, and sometimes an L-29, who drops in. Their "10 mile final" is a mystery to me. I have never flown anything remotely that fast. So I sit there, on crosswind, burning holes in the sky, at 65mph, trying to run numbers in my pea-brain, as to exactly how long that will take, at 140, 150, or 200 knots. I run out of brain cells, before the answer is reached, and frequently break off from the downwind, just to give them room, and watch how long it takes. Skinny little jets are hard to pick up, coming right at me, and I have never felt bad, busting out of the pattern, and burning a little more gas. I have heard "Hey, sorry, we didn't realilze you were doing touch&go's" I say "No worries, just giving you some room, I'm new" I try to always keep it short, and informative, but friendly as well. Next time, maybe that same guy will remember the dummy in the Chump, and let me know where he is again! Kyle, who would be flying frequently, if the fog would lift outta here!

This OF sees no point in being aware of ALL traffic within radio range. Someone who is 10 miles away at 2500 is not any factor and no time should be spent in looking for him.In fact, folks who are far away and announce are just increasing the workload of those who are close to the airport and need to spend their time looking for possible conflicts.
Keeping a continous scan out about a mile at your horizon is my first priority. Someone who says "other traffic please advise" without first giving his position, altitude, and intended path of flight is not adding anything useful to the safety of others. In my experience "XXX traffic, N DDDD is 10 north of XXX any traffic please advise." This offers no information to those inbound or in the pattern except that someone is coming. IMHO a better call would be "XXX traffic, N DDDD is 10 north at 1500', will report downwind for runway 4" I think that folks trained in older times will look around more and use less radio calls than those recently trained. Just OMO
PS quit counting near misses at 50 a while back.
Fly frequently, and often, and LOOK around,
Tony Markl

There are a number of reasons that someone can be unaware of other traffic. The phrase "any traffic please advise" serves the dual purposes of (1) advising that you are unaware of other traffic and (2) asking anyone to speak up. I think using the phrase is the smart thing to do anytime a pilot is uneasy about the situation. I have used it but I agree that usually it is not needed.

So you agree that "any traffic please advise" serves no useful purpose?

No Steve, not at all, however it did not personally offend me that he added "any traffic please advise." Now, had he said "Any traffic please let me know where you are or I will kick your butt", I would have possibly been offended.<G> Larry
