[f-AA] #### any traffic please advise

OK, gents. Let me provide an exact example of when this phrase is useful,
and appreciated. (Nothing like a new guy, to throw gas on a fire)
I fire up my trusty Chump, after the required 43 yanks of the prop, and
taxi out to the active, on a warm summer evening, here in Wenatchee. I can't
see much at all, looking into the sun, through my "Needs a new one"
windshield. My radio sucks, and my intercom in worse. I have a choice, buy
gas to fly, or a new comm system. I choose to fly, with minimal radio
ability. Peering into the sunset, I can see nothing. I call "Wenatchee
traffic, Champ 83406, taking the active 30, downwind departure, any traffic,
please advise." 90% of the time, I hear nothing, keep looking, as best as I
can (20/15 in both eyes, no problem there), and go about my merry way. 10%
of the time, I hear something like "Aircraft calling Wenatchee, Cessna xxx,
on a 45 to enter the downwind, for 12" Now, this is a good time to have used
this call. If the radio had been busy, I would have heard, and understood,
all I could from it, and had a better picture in my head. Maybe this guy
called over the north bridge, and again over the south (both local
landmarks) The point is, I didn't hear him, and though it is a big sky, and
I likely would have seen him, now I know for sure where he is, and can spot
him quick, and move on to scanning for the other guy. I'm already looking
for traffic, as best as I can, but this is added insurance, and hurts
nothing. It's kind of like the registered pervert down the street. You know
they are out there, but it sure is nice to know exactly where. Then you can
concentrate on the ones who don't report. What pisses me off, is the guy at
9000', who must not have enough oxygen, making the same calls, 10 times in 2
minutes, with a 500 watt radio, while transitioning overhead.. There is a
big difference! I feel like I am the last guy to pee on the campfire. Kyle
