Tony, I don't know for sure. I have had no trouble, in the 15 or so hours I have flown the plane, since buying it, but given that 3 exhaust seats had to be "Reground, to correct leakage", according to the logbook, I don't expect long life from these jugs. (engine has 105 SMOH) The previous owner ran only car gas, and flew a lot. He clocked about 90 hours in a year, after he rebuilt the engine. I'll be keeping my eyes on it. Thanks, Kyle

what does "valve trouble" really mean? Are you having fouling problems from carbon or lead??

Cy, I am trying to wrap my brain around this one. If the exhaust valve is leaking, wouldn't the temps be lower? Less compression = less complete combustion? I know a bad intake can do all kinds of nasty things, (lost my eyebrows, leaning over a Chevy 350, when this happened) but I am having trouble understanding this exhaust valve concept. My engine has had valve trouble 3 times, in the 100 since major. I surely got some poorly rebuilt jugs, that I will be pulling and checking out come annual time. Thanks, Kyle

I am sorry but your valve leak is the cause of your cylinder problem. When the valve leaks, it let hot gases out all the time; not just in the short pulse of the exhaust. This in turn overheats the cylinder and everything inside.

Hi Jody.I understand what the cross hatch is for.Maby that is the reason the piston got recked.It looks like ether overspeed or lack of oil.Right now the valve leak is a secondary problem.By the time I get a new piston and rings send the cylinder out for valves honeing and the manditory crack check I will be close to the price of a new cyl. and no new cyl. kind of warranty and who knows how much down time.My 16 year old daughter is ready for her solo cross country flights and I don't want her to get rusty.Tomorrow we are going on a tour of Daniel Webster Collage here in N.H.She wants to have an aviation career and is looking into air traffic control. The cross hatch is only there to provide extra oiling/cooling during break in. They can be rehoned if you wish. Has nothing to do with air leaking by the exhaust valve. This DOES deadline a cylinder. Ask your A/P to try lapping the valve in. Might have to be reground, valve and seat. You can turn the cyl. over, pour some 100 LL into the exhausr port, the look up the barrel of the cylinder to see if it is leaking, and how much it is leaking. All of this aside, Harrisson in LaPorte, IN does very good work. If chrome, they can bore them out and rechrome back to standard for @ $125 a hole.

Just finished the annual on Moya(1946 7AC).We ran the motor to see if the low cylinder would get better but still got 40/80 and hissing out the exhaust.I pulled the cylinder and the valves don't look bad ,but the piston has a bad scuff mark on it.The cylinder walls don't look too beat up,but they are very smooth(no cross hatch showing).My IA says the piston would make a good paper weight.Now I am looking for a new cylinder and piston set.Can anyone tell me where to look for the new cylinder.This group is such a Wealth of information. I don't post too often becouse I am a two fingered typer and this post took me about 15 min. to do,also most of the questions I may have seem to come up on the list when I need them.Such as the AD on having the cylinders checked for cracks each time they are removed that I read on here last night. My IA was Very impressed with my knowledge of this when we removed the cyl.Well up to 20 min now. Thanks Bill In N.H . (N2505E )
